Prayer for the Disciples
<6>I have revealed Your name to those You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours; You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. <7>Now they know that everything You have given Me comes from You. <8>For I have given them the words You gave Me, and they have received them. They knew with certainty that I came from You, and they believed that You sent Me.
<9>I ask on their behalf. I do not ask on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those You have given Me; for they are Yours. <10>All I have is Yours, and all You have is Mine; and in them I have been glorified. <11>I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to You.
Holy Father, protect them by Your name, the name You gave Me,1 so that they may be one as We are one. <12>While I was with them, I protected and preserved them by Your name, the name You gave Me. Not one of them has been lost, except the son of destruction, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.
<13>But now I am coming to You; and I am saying these things while I am in the world, so that they may have My joy fulfilled within them. <14>I have given them Your word and the world has hated them; for they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
<15>I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one.2 <16>They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. <17>Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth. <18>As You sent Me into the world, I have also sent them into the world. <19>For them I sanctify Myself, so that they too may be sanctified by the truth.
Word Come Alive
(WCA)
(An extended translation)*
Jesus prays for his apprentices
<6>‘I have revealed who you are to the people you gave me out of the world. They were your people. You gave them to me and they have kept your message faithfully. <7>They now know that all you have given me comes from you. <8>They recognise that you sent me as the Messiah, because I have given them the words you gave me, which they joyfully accepted. They were fully convinced that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.
<9>‘I am praying for them. I am not praying for the people of the world who are against me, but I pray for those you have given me, because they are your own people. <10>All I have is yours and all you have is mine. I have been honoured in their lives as they have revealed my glory by trusting in me and obeying my words. <11>I will not be staying in the world any longer, but they will remain in the world. I am now coming back to you. Holy Father, keep them faithful to you. Protect them by your power and authority, which you gave me, so that they may all be united as one in love and purpose, just as we are one. <12>While I was with them, I protected them, keeping them safe and faithful to me by the power and authority you gave me. Not one of them has been lost, except the one who was condemned to destruction, so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
<13>‘I am coming to you now, but I am saying these words while I am still in the world, so that they might be filled with my joy in their lives. <14>I have given them your message. The people of the world who are against me have hated them, because they do not conform to the ways of the world, just as I do not conform to the ways of the world. <15>My prayer is not that you remove them from the world but that they remain in the world. I pray that you will protect them from the evil one, Satan, and all the evil that flows from him. <16>They do not conform to the world but are radically different from its ways, just as I do not conform to the world but am radically different from it.
<17>‘Make them holy—like me—as that will mark them out as my distinctive people. It is the truth, your word that is truth itself, that makes them holy. <18>Just as you sent me into the world, so I have sent them out into the world. <19>I now dedicate myself to you afresh for their sake so that they too may be truly dedicated to you. Then they will be able to go out into the world as effective witnesses to me.
* Words in italics are not translated from the original Greek text. They have been added to explain and at times apply the text, much as a preacher does on a Sunday or notes do at the foot of the page in a study Bible. These additions are integrated with the text itself, and are in italics, so readers can see what has been explained, changed or added.
Study the Passage
Study Guide
This pericope begins at v. 6 with Jesus declaring that He revealed the Father’s name to His disciples. This does not mean Jesus told them God’s name, YAHWEH. We learn that in Exodus 3:15 (translated “The LORD” in English).
“Revealing” God’s name to the disciples meant showing them who God was and what he was like.”3 (His person, His attributes, and His character.)
At the end of verse 6, Jesus said His disciples kept the Father’s word.
According to v. 7, what did the disciples learn from keeping the Father’s word?
Because the disciples receive the words of the Father that Jesus gave them, what did the disciples know with certainty, and believe? (v. 8)
Based on vv. 18 & 19, what did Jesus do for His disciples?
Based on what this passage tells us about Jesus’ disciples, what can you do to grow in your:
- knowledge of
- relationship in
- service with
the Lord Jesus Christ?
