Prayer for the Son

17 <1>When Jesus had spoken these things, He lifted up His eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son may glorify You. <2>For You granted Him authority over all people,1 so that He may give eternal life to all those You have given Him. <3>Now this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent. <4>I have glorified You on earth by accomplishing the work You gave Me to do. <5>And now, Father, glorify Me in Your presence with the glory I had with You before the world existed.

Word Come Alive
(WCA)

(An extended translation)*

Jesus prays for himself

<1>After Jesus had said these words, he looked up towards heaven and prayed, ‘Father, the time has come. The time of my suffering and death has now arrived. Honour your Son with glory that your Son may honour you with glory <2>because you gave him authority over all humanity. Your purpose was that he might give eternal life to all the people you have given him. <3>Now, this is eternal life: to personally know you, the Father, the only true God, and me, Jesus Christ, whom you have sent into the world. <4>I have honoured you here on earth by completing all the work you gave me to do. With my imminent death and resurrection, I will have accomplished the work of salvation. <5>Now, Father, honour me in your presence with the glory I enjoyed with you before the universe was created.

* Words in italics are not translated from the original Greek text. They have been added to explain and at times apply the text, much as a preacher does on a Sunday or notes do at the foot of the page in a study Bible. These additions are integrated with the text itself, and are in italics, so readers can see what has been explained, changed or added.

Study the Passage

Study Guide

► What facts does John 17:1-5 teach us about Jesus?

► What do verse 2 & 3 teach us about eternal life?

John chapter 17 may be the most intimate conversation Jesus had in all of Scripture. It is a prayer of Jesus to His Father.

To be intimate means to have a close, personal, familiar or affectionate relationship with someone, often characterized by deep emotional bonding, trust, and vulnerability.

► How would you describe your relationship with the Father? (Explain)

  • Intimate?
  • or incomplete (unfinished)?
  • or inadequate (insufficient)?
  • or inaccessible (unapproachable)?

Your prayer life reflects your relationship with God!

Seek Him with all your heart. (James 4:8; Jeremiah 29:13; Psalm 63:1–8; James 4:8)
