Belief and Unbelief

<37>Although Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still did not believe in Him. <38>This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:

“Lord, who has believed our message?

And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”1

<39>For this reason they were unable to believe. For again, Isaiah says:

<40>“He has blinded their eyes

and hardened their hearts,

so that they cannot see with their eyes,

and understand with their hearts,

and turn,

and I would heal them.”2

<41>Isaiah said these things because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about Him. <42>Nevertheless, many of the leaders believed in Him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue. <43>For they loved praise from men more than praise from God.

<44>Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in Me does not believe in Me alone, but in the One who sent Me. <45>And whoever sees Me sees the One who sent Me. <46>I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in Me should remain in darkness.

<47>As for anyone who hears My words and does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world. <48>There is a judge for the one who rejects Me and does not receive My words: The word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.

<49>I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me has commanded Me what to say and how to say it. <500And I know that His command leads to eternal life. So I speak exactly what the Father has told Me to say.”

Word Come Alive
(WCA)

(An extended translation)*

<37>They saw Jesus do so many miracles and speak so many wonderful words, but even after he had done all this, most of the people still refused to trust in him. <38>Their unwillingness fulfilled the words of the prophet Isaiah: ‘Lord, who has believed the message we have reported?’—‘No one.’Where has God’s power been unleashed?’—‘Here and now!’3 <39>This is why they couldn’t believe, as another prophecy of Isaiah says, <40>God has confirmed their stubbornness. He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts. The result is that they can neither discern nor understand the true condition of their souls. They refuse to turn back to me, for if they did, I would heal them and give them new life.’4 <41>Isaiah spoke those words about the vision he glimpsed of Jesus’ power and majesty.

<42>At the same time all this was going on, many people—including many of the Jewish leaders—came to trust in him. They kept quiet, however, because they were afraid of the Pharisees. They knew that if they went public and were open about their new-found faith, they would be expelled from their own faith community. <43>But underlying their cowardice was a deeper motive. They were more concerned about what other people thought of them than they were about the honour that comes from God.

Jesus makes an urgent appeal

<44>Then Jesus declared, ‘If you trust in me, you don’t believe only in me but also in the One who sent me. <45>The person who looks intently at me sees the One who sent me. I am one with the Father. <46>I have come into this dark world as the light so that none of those who trust in me should be left in the dark but will come into the light. They will then clearly see the way ahead.

<47>‘I don’t judge the person who merely hears my words, but doesn’t put them into practice. You see, my main purpose in coming into the world wasn’t to judge and condemn the world but to save it. <48>The person who doesn’t welcome my message but rejects me will have a judge. Rejecting me will have eternal consequences. In fact, even the message I’ve declared will condemn that person in the last judgment. I therefore urge you: make sure you are prepared for the final judgment, when you have to give an account of your lives to my Father. <49>Again I say, the message I’ve declared is not really my own. No, what I’ve taught has come from the Father who sent me. He has commanded me to express all the words I’ve spoken. <50>I know that the ultimate purpose of his command is to give eternal life. So everything I say is exactly what the Father has told me to say.’

These additions are integrated with the text itself, and are in italics, so readers can see what has been explained, changed or added.

Study the Passage

Study Guide

Read the study passage from the Word Come Alive extended translation above. It provides an explanatory translation that will help you understand the passage and answer the following questions.

This passage has two distinct parts:

  1. Verses 37-43 provide a summary explaining why so many people did not accept Jesus as their Messiah. This is not something Jesus said. It’s a note from the author to us, his readers.
  2. In verses 44-50, Jesus cried out to a crowd of people this summary of the message He preached to everyone.

This is Jesus’ last public teaching event in the Gospel of John, just before His crucifixion. He summarized His message

According to verses 37-43, why did so many people reject Jesus’ signs and teachings, failing to recognize him as the Son of God, the promised Messiah?

What do verses 44-46 say about those who believe in Jesus?

What do verses 47-48 say about people who are rejecting Jesus and not accepting His words?

What do verses 49-50 say about the message Jesus preached during His ministry?
