<1> That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our own eyes, which we have gazed upon and touched with our own hands—this is the Word of life. <2>And this is the life that was revealed; we have seen it and testified to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us.

<3>We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And this fellowship of ours is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. <4>We write these things so that our1 joy may be complete.

We apostles proclaim to you the message about the One who has lived eternally, so that you may be joined together with us and we may be completely happy. (1 John 1:1-4)

<1>I, John, am writing to you about the one who existed before there was anything else. He is the one whom we apostles listened to as he taught us! We saw him! We ourselves looked at him and touched him! He is the one who taught us the message that enables people to have eternal life.

<2>Because he came here to the earth and we have seen him, we proclaim to you clearly that the one whom we have seen is the one who has always lived. He was previously with his Father in heaven, but he came to live among us.

<3>We proclaim to you the message about Jesus, the one whom we saw and heard, in order that you may have a close relationship with us. The ones whom we have a close relationship with are God our Father and his Son Jesus Christ.

<4>I am writing to you about these things so that you believe that they are true, and as a result we may be completely joyful.

Fishing Instructions (vv. 1-14)

  • What did the disciples do when Jesus told them to toss their net on the right-side of the boad?
  • How might that, and the other things recorded in these verses, apply to our efforts to fish for men (evangelize)?

Shepherding Instructions (vv. 15-23)

  • How did Peter respond to Jesus’ questions? Why?
  • What did Peter ask Jesus near the end of their conversation? (vv. 20-21)
  • What was Jesus’ final instruction to Peter? (v. 21)
  • How does Jesus’ instruction in v. 21 relate to His instructions to Peter in vv. 15-17?
  • How might Jesus’ conversation with Peter, and the instructions He gave Peter, apply to our efforts to shepherd (treat, care for) other believers in Jesus?

John’s Testimony of Authentication (vv. 24-25)

  • What is the significance of John’s statement in vv. 24-25?
  • How should that statement affect our reading, studying, understanding and response to the Gospel of John? To the whole Bible?
