There are six common instructor roles that can help students learn.  This list describes key, distinct characteristics of each role. 

Tutor

• Engages with a single person or small group of students on an as-needed or scheduled basis.
• Helps students by encouraging and motivating them, and by helping them find answers to their questions.
• Must be familiar with the material and the needs of the participant(s).

Discussion leader‌

• Facilitates and leads engaging discussions utilizing published or provided study guides and lesson plans.
• Must be familiar with the topic or Bible passage and be sensitive to the specific needs of the participants.

‌Teacher‌

• Proclaims, explains, and engages participants in discussions of God’s word, utilizing their own study guides/lesson plans.
• Must be familiar with the topic or Bible passage and be sensitive to the specific needs of the participants.

Trainer‌

• Trains and actively engages participants in the tasks and duties of a specific ministry role.
• Focuses on the practical aspects of the role to prepare them to fulfil the responsibilities of that role on their own.
• Prepares and trains from their own education, experience, and relevant materials based on Biblical principles relevant to that role.

Mentor‌

• A combination of teacher and trainer, depending on the needs of the participant(s).

Preacher‌

• Same as a teacher but rarely interacts with the congregation during a sermon.
