In the realm of discipleship, we can identify five common speaking roles by which Holy Spirit manifests Himself through believers in Jesus. This list describes key, distinct characteristics of each role.
Discussion leader
- Focuses on the study topic or Bible passage with an eye on the needs of the group members.
- Prepares and leads discussions using published or provided study guides/lesson plans.
Teacher
- Focuses on the study topic or Bible passage with an eye on the needs of the group members.
- Prepares using various Bible study resources; usually teaches and leads discussions using their own study guides/lesson plans.
Trainer
- Focuses on practical aspects of ministry with an eye to equip and qualify people for that ministry.
- Prepares and trains from their own education, experience and relevant materials based on Biblical principles.
Mentor
- A combination of teacher and trainer.
Preacher
- Same as a teacher but rarely, if ever, interacts with the group.
